Eileen Ciezki, Director of Social Ministry

Why I love my work at Gesu

It’s the “People of God” who make my work at Gesu a joy and an inspiration. I would not be exaggerating to say, that every single leader and minister in the Gesu social and twinning ministries give of their extra time, effort and compassion with a sure faith in God and a dedication to the poor and to righting the injustices of our society, that is a grace and a blessing to witness and be part of. I am also privileged to have time talking and being with those we call “poor.” For an individual, a parent, a family to endure the lack of material necessities—enough food, pampers for the baby, bus fare, money to pay the utility bill in an old, drafty flat; money for medicines— either in our Gesu neighborhood or in our twin parish, St. Jude, does not reduce the personal integrity, dignity of that person or family. It is a “miracle” in my eyes that they continue to persevere. And often, the faith and gratitude the materially poor express for God and for what little help a parish ministry can provide, is humbling and reminds me of the scripture “those who are last shall be first.”
